About Bodhan

The city is sub divided into three main divisions namely Bodhan, Rakasipet and Shankar Nagar which are the vital landmark areas of Bodhan city. Bodhan is well known for its ancient monuments and Nizam sugar factory. The current city of Bodhan grounds numerous commercial and industrial landmarks in its grounds.  

People of all religions and communities reside in the city who mostly speaks Telugu language. Bodhan city records a total population of 77,573 as per 2011 population census.

History of Bodhan

Bodhan was an ancient and a historic city is Telangana. As per Anguttara Nikaya a Buddhist text Bodhan was one of the 16 Mahajanapadas in sixth century BC and it the only Mahajanapadas that is sited between the Rivers Godavari and Manjira to the south of Vindhya Range and it belonged to Assaka region in Dakshinapatha. The most popular ruler of the city was King Baahubali.

Geography of Bodhan

Bodhan city covers a total area of 21. 36 sq km that is 8.25 sq mi. The city is elevated at a height of 357 meters above sea level which is 1171 feet and it got its coordinates at 18.67° North latitude and 77.9° East longitude. Bodhan is bounded by Yedapalle Mandal in the East, Kotgiri Mandal in the west, Varni Mandal in the South and Renjal Mandal in the North. Summers are hot and winters are very cool in Bodhan.

Bodhan city homes two big ponds its grounds namely the Pandava Lake in Buswatarag Nagar and Chakki Talaab in Buswatarag Nagar which forms a huge source of water to the city. The city is surrounded by numerous water streams in all its sides like Pedda Vaagu flows very close to the north east boundary of the city, a tributary from Manjira River flows close to the south west of the city and Bodhan is located amidst many ponds namely Bellal Talaab, Sangam Cheru talaab and Pedda Chervu close to its south border, Pentakalan Chervu talaab and Puli Chervu talaabs close to its north east boundary, Jadi, Jalampur Lake, Kummanpally Lake close to its west border.

The popular areas and localities in Bodhan city are Achanpalli, Housing board colony, Udmeer Gally, Shakar Ngar, Saraswathi Nagar, Buswatarag Nagar, Gouse Nagar, RTC Colony, Chekky Camp, Rakasipet, Ward number 12, Azam Gunj and Shanti Nagar Colony.

The Achanpalli locality forms the top end of Bodhan on the borders of state highway SH 25 and it homes the famous Alivelu Mangamma temple in its grounds. The Housing Board Colony below Achanpalli locality on the north west of Bodhan along the state highway SH 6 homes the popular CSI Church in its home. 

The Udmeer Gally locality on the west of Bodhan homes numerous pilgrims like Ismail Yaar Jung Shafeeq Chaman Masjid Ubair, Ahmed Masjid, Mashaikh Masjid and 100 Pillar Temple in its grounds. Through Udmeer Gally the state highway SH 25 passes. The Shankar Nagar locality in the east end of Bodhan along state highway SH 6 homes vital landmarks in its grounds like the Shankar railway station, Shankar Nagar market, Nizam Deccan Sugar Factory and pilgrims like Pochamma Sri Rajarajeshwari temple, Sri Rama temple and Shankar Nagar Mosque.

The Saraswathi Nagar in the heart of Bodhan along the state highway SH 6 homes the Srinivasa movie theatre, Masjid-e- Razzaq and the Bodhan bus station in its grounds. The Buswatarag Nagar locality in the west of Bodhan homes the two big ponds of Bodhan city namely Pandava Lake and Chakki Talaab. The Buswatarag Nagar locality is sited exactly between the state highways SH 6 in the east and SH 25 in the west. The Chekky Camp locality is sited on the south west end of Bodhan and it homes the popular Sai Baba temple in its grounds. The Azam Gunj locality on the south west end of the city homes the Bodhan market in its grounds.

The RTC Colony locality is sited on the banks of Chakki Talaab in the south of Bodhan. The Rakasipet locality sited on the south end of Bodhan homes the Bodhan Railway station and many popular pilgrims like Masjid - e-Umar Farooq, Ganesh Temple and a Church. Through the Rakasipet locality the state highway SH 6 runs through and it grounds the ancient historic monument “Bhimuni Gutta”.

Bodhan city constitutes a Municipality with 35 wards within its jurisdiction for which elections are held once in 5 years to elect 35 ward members to the Bodhan Municipality to form local self-government in Bodhan which is responsible for administration and revenue. The Bodhan municipality offers the basic amenities to the citizens of Bodhan like drinking water, electric power, sewage clearance, city sanitation and many more.

It is one of the three revenue divisions in Nizamabad district apart from Nizamabad and Kamareddy. Bodhan city is one of the 36 mandals or sub divisions in Nizamabad district with mandal code “14”. Being a revenue division cum mandal division of Nizamabad the Mandal Revenue Office also operates in the city.

Bodhan city belongs to Nizamabad Lok Sabha constituency and the current MP of the constituency is Smt. Kalvakuntla Kavitha elected to Indian Parliament in the year 2014.

Bodhan court in the city is an additional district court functioned by the state government of Telangana under the Telangana High court headed by Additional District Judges and Assistant District Judges. Bodhan court is a VII additional district court in the state and it comprises of senior civil judge’s court and junior civil judge’s court.

Nizam Sugar Factory in Bodhan

The Nizam sugar factory is a very popular landmark in the city which was established in the year 1921. The factory was started by the then Nizam of Hyderabad Mir Osman Ali Khan in about 15000 acres of plot in Shankar Nagar locality of Bodhan. It was once Asia’s largest sugar factory but currently it is closed permanently and was stated as sick unit. The Shankar Nagar railway station is sited very close to the sugar factory.
